To Patโ€™s Friends, Family, and Fans;

I didnโ€™t think I would ever find myself writing in an online guestbook for an author whose work I have yet to read. That first line I just wrote may be puzzling to any family, friends, or fans of his work. Patโ€™s name sounded familiar to me, almost as if it wouldโ€™ve been mentioned in a highschool English class from years ago. I canโ€™t say that this was the case, or if it was from a coincidence which I will get to later in this post. I gratuated highschool in 2016, the same year that Pat wouldโ€™ve tragically passed away from this earthly life. I canโ€™t speak to his work yet, since Iโ€™ve not read it myself, but Iโ€™m looking forward to adding some his books to my never ending reading list. Reading books from various authors is such a powerful way to discover the great world that we live in, and peopleโ€™s experiences in it. If Iโ€™m transparent, I find myself enjoying collecting classic books/authors (Jane Austen, Margaret Thatcher, Socrates, etc) more than I enjoy reading themโ€” chalk it up to the older grammar and words used. Iโ€™m sure since Patโ€™s work is more modern that I would come to love it when Iโ€™m able to get around to reading it. I find myself being so busy with โ€œlifeโ€ itself, that I often find myself neglecting a passion of mine- reading and writing.

I will now tell you how Iโ€™ve come to know of Mr. Conroyโ€™s work. My husband was a local of the NC coast. Iโ€™m from Pennsylvania. As God would have it, we fell inlove and got married and moved to Conway, SC for his job at Coastal Carolina University. We originally met while he was working at George Mason in Fairfax, VA. All of this to say, weโ€™re finally a bit more settled and we actually decided we wanted to take a long weekend trip to getaway from the busy pace and traffic of Conway, and go a little further south to enjoy a slow and blissful romantic weekend together. We decided we wanted to stay at the Rhett House inn, which, coincidentally enough mentioned Pat and his work on their website.

I donโ€™t know if any of his family (or his colleagues) would be interested, but it would be a privilege to connect during I and my husbandโ€™s stay in Beaufort, and learn more about what made Pat who he was, so one day when Iโ€™m reading his books, it will all come together.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Ashlen Pickard
