The Lords of Discipline was my favorite book of my latter teenage years. What a fantastic coming of age story. As it turned out, one of my high school teammates ended up playing football and running track at The Citadel.
Just recently, the book crossed my mind and I decided to read it again as a 56 year old man. It resonated just as much and I have a greater understanding of some of the themes. It's easy to see so much of myself in Will McClean. Maybe a lot of people feel that way and that's one of the things that made it an epic novel. I so enjoyed my second reading of it that I was a bit sad it had to end.
What a HUGE loss to not have Pat Conroy living, breathing and writing amongst us in 2026. However, he is somewhat immortal through his tremendous tales that will hopefully be read forever. I'm incredibly grateful for the time he had on earth and all he shared with the rest of us. Even though his life was seemingly tortured, his work is a great comfort to the rest of us.
Thank you, so much, Pat Conroy. I'll be rooting for The Citadel's hoops team.
