I have just finished reading South of Broad.
I can't believe it exceeded my expectations. I thought Beach Music was quite possibly your best book ever. However, I was sooo wrong. I just love reading your books, I walk with you and can see every detail of the sights you see and literally smell every thing you smell. Thank you for being my favorite southern writer!!

Dear Mr. Conroy, Since you're a fan of "A Christmas Carol,"you may enjoy "The Prompt Copy of a Christmas Carol" that Levenger Press published this December. It's (a facsimile of) the copy Dickens himself used--and marked up, scratched out and glued together--when he performed the book, which he did often. And to paraphrase Tiny Tim, God bless your books, every one, as they are all so marvelous. Best regards from a longtime fan.

Whew- thanks so very much for coming to Jefferson Pat. You completely exceeded ALL my expectations of the man behind the magic pen. I LOVED hearing all your stories. I just knew you had to be a stitch. What a perfect venue for a guy that can really talk to women- Girlfriend Weekend! For all of us "wanna be's," it was fun hearing about your journey, especially the publishing exploits. Glad you are in such a good place in your life now- you deserve it ! I will forever cherish the big smile you shot me from your table to mine. Thanks for the restaurant advice you gave us for our trip to Charleston. Good luck- please keep the stories coming.
Cheers-Katie Allred Marshall,Texas

Pat, thak-you for a lovely and moving story whose characters will stay with me forever. As a resident of SF and a fan of Charleston, it was a very special treat. I awoke last night at 12:30 am to finish the book and was not diasppointed! I keep thinking to myself...will there be a movie? Who wll play which roles? Thank-you!

South of Broad is one of the most beautifully written, moving and entertaining books I've ever read, including your other novels that I love so much. Thank you for creating such a story and for writing it as you did. Among other aspects, I loved the "wiseguy" humor throughout, probably because it hit home, but went even beyond where mine usually goes. You've been one of my very favorite authors since the beginning, but SOB is truly a masterpiece. Thank you, and congratulations.

Pat, I am a true devotee, loved SOB, just got the cookbook. Was with someone today from Fripp. Would love to see you here at a UVA bball game; you would really like the new coach, true gentleman, inspiring to the players, and tenacious on defense. UVA just beat Ga. Tech! Saw you at a game 3-4 yrs ago here sitting with a mutual friend, if he doesn't ask you back, contact me, I woiuld be glad to invite you. Looking forward to your next work. My daughter went to CofC,early elementary ed,I gave her The Water is Wide, after she read SOB and Prince of Tides; she is now also a devotee. Best wishes for a passionate and productive year!!!

12JAN2009:
Pat, you and I had a great conversation many years ago in Winston-Salem, NC when you spoke at the Center for Contemporary art. I believe it was '88 or '89. We talked about many things, but one of my favorite subjects was about my one and only true love in life, SAB, whom you taught in high school in Beaufort. I spent the holiday break re-reading all of your wonderful books. I am now in the middle of "South of Broad." Really enjoy your cookbook, too. BTW, my brother was born in New Bern, NC. I was born in Beaufort, NC. All my best to you! Jack
