Pat,
You may remember me as the fellow who wrote you after reading "My Losing Season" and who played BB at Mercer with Don Baxter when you were at Citadel. Our college BB experiences were so alike and yet so different also. You called me when you read the letter and we had a nice talk. Sorta thrilled me, really. You said to come by and see you if I was ever in your area. I have always wanted to visit Charleston and my wife and I have decided to celebrate my medicare eligibility (I am 6 months older than you) there April 19-21, 2010. Rest assured, I will have read "South of Broad" before arriving. Unfortunately, this is the only way I know how to reach you. If interested, get in touch with me. I hope to hear from you either way.
Thanks, Steve

It is with a mixture of joy and sadness that I approach any of your books, Mr. Conroy. There is a lust to dive in and drench myself in the richness of your words and the depth of your pain, wondering where it will take me and what is on the other side. I love South of Broad, I devoured it, I passed it on. Equally, I devoured your posted letter on this site and am grieved by your condition (which take a stab at talking about but most gets blunted away by your shields). Shamefully, I hope that you have more than 3 books left in you. I hope your time with us will go on much beyond that in any case. You will always have my greatest admiration and love for all you have given, and in the way you so bravely put yourself on display through your works.

Our book club had a delightful discussion on South of Broad at our last meeting. Our only rule is to eat a place that supports the environment of the story. She-crab soup and shrimp and grit were in order.

How can we share pictures?

Pat, I made a connection with your books after reading The Prince of Tides. When we moved to Atlanta 20 years ago from Ohio; I was so excited I would live in the same town. Then I met you when you at Emory and you said you were moving! Anyway. Like everyone else - you are the best in my book. I'm thrilled because I am savoring South of Broad and my husband is taking me to Charleston in April!!! Will you be speaking anywhere? I'm betting you don't get on this site because you said you had to handwrite all your books because you didn't even use a typewriter. I'm wondering if this has changed and you finally caved and became a techy! God Bless you. When I need a vacation from work, I read your words from any book and the stress melts away. You are better than drugs!

Hi Pat, I have been a loyal fan since I first read Prince of Tides. I am an avid reader, and had never read anything so moving. I have read all your books, incl The Boo and South of Broad. Please, please write something again soon. Have yet to find another author whose words fill me with so much emotion. My aim is to get to the south and see all the lovely places you speak of. Thank you, Pat.

What can I say about Pat Conroy's book?, Each one of his novel are fiiled with wisdome and a lot of feeling. I can't help to feel so overwhelming every time I finish to read each one of his books, the way he writes can touch the very inner and so deep in my heart and soul...My golden dream is to meet him someday and shake his hand and talk about the real meaning of life. I'm working on it! ; hopefully I'll thank him for give me so much pleasure and joy to my heart and soul. God Bless you Pat Conroy!!!

I wept when I read of your near 'purchase of the farm' of this past August... I pray that you are blessed with many more years of your incredible gift of articulation. I didn't know that I could taste the salt from the waters just by the way someone writes... nor smell magnolias in the sweetest of sweet, before ever experiencing one for the first time... your gift is magnificent and may it be present for so many of us, for years to come. I am so selfish!

I am amazed that anyone can write this well. South of Broad was at least as good as Pat's other books. My reaction upon completing this novel was to begin again.

Pat,
Your description of Starla in South of Broad as one afflicted with BPD is so accurate, it appears you might have first hand knowledge. I especially appreciated the passage about the job of one with BPD is to make everyone around them miserable. Is it possible you had one like that? I've had one for 37 years. Is there really no hope?
