Dear Mr Conroy
Thank you for the gift of your latest novel. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Leo and his collection of misfits. Whenever I read your books I am restless for a few days afterwards wishing I could hop on a plane and go walk the streets you so vividly detail. South of Broad sent me searching for recipes of Benne wafers. Long may you keep writing.
Best wishes. Sherryl

Just finished South of Broad for my book club. I take offense at your anti-Catholicism. Apparently, you are associating Catholicism with your father--abusive rather than a religion of love. You get your facts about Catholicism wrong, too. The Catholic church does not forbid divorce. Divorce is a legal matter. What the Catholic Church does not approve us is remarriage (if the first marriage was sacramental and valid). Therefore, your main character could have divorced his wife (a legality) although still be married in the eye of the Church. Also, I didn't like the gratuitous naming of the monsignor as the pedophile at the end of the book. Again, what kind of Catholic upbrining did you have? Not the one I had, obviously.

Just finished South of Broad. It was tremendous.--I thought it was even better than Prince of Tides and Beach Music. Thank You

Having read and enjoyed all of Mr. Conroys books, I sincerely hope to have more books to come. Having been an exchange student in a beautiful Atlanta home in 1976 I learned to enjoy the US and the South, and I find it portraied as I imagine the South to be.
I am happy today to do business in the US, and likes coming back to the US and South. Having read South of Broad, I guess I have to see Charleston also soon.
Wish I had the same gift with words.

I have been a fan for a long time. I always look forward to your next book. I recently read "South of Broad." For the most part, I enjoyed it. However, most of the characters seemed like characters reworked from other stories. As an example, Sheba was just another version of Lila Wingo. I could give several versions, but you know what I mean. You can do better and you have. Thanks.

Just finished "South of Broad" and find myself in love with the idea of Sheba Poe. Thank you for writing and sharing, I really did enjoy the book. It seems that your writing becomes a part on my own personal experience, as if I lived it. Thanks

I am ONE of your #1 fans! My son will be a knob at The Citadel fall 2010.
You met a friend of mine and told her to tell me that Lords of Discipline had a lot of truth to it! I knew that already! Haha! Last week my son received a letter from You (from The Citadel). I ripped it open and read each word like I would eat a decadent dessert! When I got to the last sentence I was ecstatic to see your quote from Robert Frost! That was the quote I used for my son's senior quote that best defines Him! I also chose the poem Invictus for him. When I saw your quote I squealed and screamed with delight!!! You are an artist and magician with words! I feel as though I know you and love you! My son says I cannot meet you because I would make a fool of myself

Pat,
I just read your open letter of 8-3-09 and was sorry to hear about your illness. Whatever it was (not Is), I hope it was not serious. Sorry I did not mention this in my earlier comment today. Still hope to meet you.

Pat,
You may remember me as the fellow who wrote you after reading "My Losing Season" and who played BB at Mercer with Don Baxter when you were at Citadel. Our college BB experiences were so alike and yet so different also. You called me when you read the letter and we had a nice talk. Sorta thrilled me, really. You said to come by and see you if I was ever in your area. I have always wanted to visit Charleston and my wife and I have decided to celebrate my medicare eligibility (I am 6 months older than you) there April 19-21, 2010. Rest assured, I will have read "South of Broad" before arriving. Unfortunately, this is the only way I know how to reach you. If interested, get in touch with me. I hope to hear from you either way.
Thanks, Steve

It is with a mixture of joy and sadness that I approach any of your books, Mr. Conroy. There is a lust to dive in and drench myself in the richness of your words and the depth of your pain, wondering where it will take me and what is on the other side. I love South of Broad, I devoured it, I passed it on. Equally, I devoured your posted letter on this site and am grieved by your condition (which take a stab at talking about but most gets blunted away by your shields). Shamefully, I hope that you have more than 3 books left in you. I hope your time with us will go on much beyond that in any case. You will always have my greatest admiration and love for all you have given, and in the way you so bravely put yourself on display through your works.
