If only I could put into words how much joy your books have brought into my life. My 24 year old son just recently decided to enrich his life through fiction and the author he chose to read was you (through me). Then one day he told me he had an epiphany about wanting to be a writer. I've always thought he should be a writer but, of course, kids don't listen to their parents when they're young. He wants to write about a dear friend of his who died quite tragically and very young. He says he wants to write like Pat Conroy, tragedy and adveristy, and of course beauty. You have a gift. You can string the most beautiful words together. I find myself reading and re-reading sentence after sentence...

I met you at Litchfield Books. James Dickey was my parents neighbor and I told you how much Maxine Dickey loved you and your writing. I loved South of Broad . I used to live in Charleston and lived through Hugo. I moved to the mountains of NC after we rebuilt the house. South of Broad made me realize how much I still love Charleston.

I was born and raised in New England and many years ago spent a year in Charleston. I was homesick for the cool crisp North. Found The Great Santini at the library and that began my ever lasting love and joy for your writing and opened my eyes to the beauty of the South.
Thank you for your gift.

Hi Pat,

I have been a fan of yours for soooooooo long. I moved here from Birmingham, where I understand your good friend Big Jake owns Highland Booksmith. I'm friends with his son and daughter-in-law (Little Jake), and we have had countless conversations about your books. I have not yet read South of Broad but am looking forward to it!

Keep it up--you make the world a better place!

Beth

I treasure the semester I had Mr. Conroy as my psychology teacher at Beaufort High. He told us what it was like to be the only white guy playing basketball...made us THINK. Told us what his father thought about him becoming a teacher..taught us about choices. It was his last year, then he moved on to teach at Daufuskie, and we all know what happened next! Later as newlyweds, my husband and I had a Halloween party for some of his students who had never been Trick or Treating. I cherish all of my "Mr Conroy" books, and in them he continues teaching...just in a different way.

I have loved your books most all my life. I was in the 5th grade when they filmed Conrack just down the road from my home and a classmate was actually cast as one of the children. Of course, I didn't read the book until years later, but it was the first I read. I look forward to my next trip to the book store.

Read all your books, and was one of the reasons wife and I moved to SC/Charleston area. Visualize your experiences when I visit the Citidel to watch formation drill on Fridays. Put you right up there with Hemingway in descriptive characters and sentences. Have a nice autographed copy of "The Boo" which was the fist book I read written by you. Keep up the great writing Pat. I devour your books when they come out.

Hi Pat,
I just finished The Prince of Tides, following South of Broad, Beach Music, The Great Santini and your cookbook. They're all wonderful and your use of language paints such extraordinary images for me. Beach Music is my current favorite simply because part of it is set in Rome and my daughter lives near Pisa and Lucca.
You are very well read among our friends here in Ashland, Virginia and if we can convince you to make a presentation at Randolph Macon College I promise we'll tempt you with memorable meals including; 'Jackie's Own' Ice cream, Pizza Margherita cooked in an Italian wood fired oven, local chianini beef, and Hanover tomatoes. You'll need to bring SC peaches. Tempted?
Thank you again for your powerful writing. I hope you'll consider a vist here.
Jack Douglas
