I saw the film The Great Santini when I was 10 years old, while living on a Marine Air Station. I read your book immediately after - I stole it from my Mother and kept it hidden under my bed. My childhood was very similar to The Great Santini... your writing was a great source of strength for me, however limited my understanding was at the time. I read it and reread it until it fell apart and then stole a copy from the library. I always keep a copy in my library.

As a young woman, I fell in love with Prince Of Tides, and was surprised and pleased and really, I was unsurprised my when I realized my childhood 'survival guide' was another work of yours.

Your writing gave me strength. Thank you.

Hello Mr. Conroy!

I am just finishing South of Broad, and as a Columbia native growing up in the Charleston summers, I thoroughly enjoy your poetic memories of this great Southern city. I hope to make it to Savannah for your book signing, and cannot wait to read your other books and a potential novel about Atlanta. Having lived in the booming Hotlanta for the past five years, I can give you great tips from a 20-something POV.

Be safe and healthy!
Best, Kat Reynolds

I am honored to be able to write my comments about your books. Your books sing to me in a way that no other book ever does. I love the wittiness of your characters dialogue. I love the descriptions of the various places that the characters are in... But mostly, I love how the way your books carry me along like in the rivers or marshes you love so much. Your books sing in a way that touches my sould and moves me to tears...
Thank you for writing.

I remember your writing from a very difficult time in my life, as my chosen memory. It helped to dim the ugliness and to brighten the hope, especially the locale since I am a southerner who left the south to escape from what was so ugly about it. Now it shines thanks to your writing.

Mr. Conroy,
You are to me as James Joyce to Lindsay King. I have read all of your books, and each one reaffirms the reason you are my favorite author: your characters, flawed and heroic, capture the human spirit like no others ever created. Beach Music made me laugh out loud and South of Broad brought me to tears. I grew up in a little town called Lake City, SC about 2 hours from Charleston, so I love reading and recognizing landmarks, cultural traditions, and even characters such as "Wormy" with which I am so familiar. One day I hope to meet you, although I can never adequately express the role your books, and in turn you, have played in enriching my life. I am an English teacher, and I stand in awe of your gift as a master of the language.
Thank You,
Gwen Hanna York

Inspirational! You were the best author at the Playhouse Square Writer's Series a few years ago. You signed all my first-editions and I thank you. I'm writing about my own experiences as an Army brat. Can't wait for your next book to appear.

I finished the book "The Water is Wide" while vacationing on Daufuskie Island. I met "Top Cat". He is now a grave digger on the island. I also met the man that was the white boy that had his own school. The island was amazing! Loved your book.

I just sent you an email on your website. I really hope you'll get it. I am adoring South of Broad and look forward with great anticipation to My Reading Life. You are such a great master of words, it's just thrilling!

I didn't know you were ill, but I've read that in the letters people have written to you. I hope you're feeling better.

Fond regards,
Anita Brandt Burgoyne
