I remember your writing from a very difficult time in my life, as my chosen memory. It helped to dim the ugliness and to brighten the hope, especially the locale since I am a southerner who left the south to escape from what was so ugly about it. Now it shines thanks to your writing.

Mr. Conroy,
You are to me as James Joyce to Lindsay King. I have read all of your books, and each one reaffirms the reason you are my favorite author: your characters, flawed and heroic, capture the human spirit like no others ever created. Beach Music made me laugh out loud and South of Broad brought me to tears. I grew up in a little town called Lake City, SC about 2 hours from Charleston, so I love reading and recognizing landmarks, cultural traditions, and even characters such as "Wormy" with which I am so familiar. One day I hope to meet you, although I can never adequately express the role your books, and in turn you, have played in enriching my life. I am an English teacher, and I stand in awe of your gift as a master of the language.
Thank You,
Gwen Hanna York

Inspirational! You were the best author at the Playhouse Square Writer's Series a few years ago. You signed all my first-editions and I thank you. I'm writing about my own experiences as an Army brat. Can't wait for your next book to appear.

I finished the book "The Water is Wide" while vacationing on Daufuskie Island. I met "Top Cat". He is now a grave digger on the island. I also met the man that was the white boy that had his own school. The island was amazing! Loved your book.

I just sent you an email on your website. I really hope you'll get it. I am adoring South of Broad and look forward with great anticipation to My Reading Life. You are such a great master of words, it's just thrilling!

I didn't know you were ill, but I've read that in the letters people have written to you. I hope you're feeling better.

Fond regards,
Anita Brandt Burgoyne

I hope your health is continuing to improve and that you are enjoying life again. I've enjoyed hearing you speak twice (Once for My Losing Season and once for South of Broad) and I hope to have that privilege again; listening to you tell stories is almost as good as reading your prose.

I have much to thank you for and and no adequate words to express my gratitude. I can say your books were a beacon when my existence was extremely dark. Thank you for guiding me back to the light.

I wish you and all your family well. Take care of yourself, sir. Your work is much appreciated.

I recently read your cook book and enjoyed it very much, especially the personal stories attached to all your recipies. As a fan of grits, I think you might enjoy knowing about Anson Mills in SC. (ansonmills.com) They grow old style grains and grind them into wonderful traditional products. You can order the grits online, and they are truly better than any I've ever made or eaten before. I am only a customer of theirs, so I'm only passing along a suggestion. Thanks for all your great writing, of which I have read every word published so far.

I am SUCH a fan! I grew up in the upstate of South Carolina, but have visited Charleston MANY times. I graduated from USC and my boyfriend went to the Citadel. When I read your books, I feel as if I'm living them because I can relate to the locations. I picture them in my mind. I've read SOUTH OF BROAD...What a great read! I couldn't put it down! I've read BEACH MUSIC... totally awesome! I've just bought PRINCE OF TIDES! I can't wait to get started! LORDS OF DISCIPLINE is next on my list. I now live in West Columbia, SC. South Carolina is my home and always will be! I AM a Carolina Girl!
