I absolutely love Beach Music. I read it many moons ago and have often said it's my favorite book. I just found a copy and am going to read it again - finally! There is something about the way you tell the lives of real people but intertwine them in a way no one else knows how. As a fellow Catholic, now also living in the South, I also love your snippets of growing up Catholic in the South!! Going to check out your events. Sure hope since I am kind of "nearby" that there will be an opportunity to attend one of your events. Going to check out the "Events" now.

I got hooked on your prose by reading your most recent book. Then from there I went to our Half Price Books here and bought "The Water Is Wide" (which I finished last night) and The Prince Of Tides (which I'm starting today). Still searching for "The Lords of Disicipline." "Beach Music" was wonderful as well. You are a gifted writer, Mr. Conroy. I have a journalism degree from the Piney Woods of Nacogdoches, Texas. My brain is trained to write news stories. I wish I could be HALF the writer that you are! Please don't stop writing either!! We Conroy fans will hunger for more books from you!!

I have read every one of your books and loved them all. You were in my ex husband's english class at the Citadel. He was in November company. I have been to a couple of reunions but never saw you to have you sign a book. I am not married to Mr. Bowley anymore, (vietnam vet). But I truly look forward to any new writing from you. I do remember in the 60s being at a senior party at Folly Beach Pier roaming around to the music of the Tams!!! Great memories,,,; - )
Thank You for giving me the pleasure of enjoying your writing. The first book I read was "The Water is Wide" ( it is a great song as well and so fits the story). I was truly inspired because I was and still am an inner city teacher. I have been told lots of stories about the "Boo" and got to meet him at a reunion.

Would be great if you came out to Montana. There are no salt marshes, sea grass, or turtles.....but there are mountains, rimrocks, cowboys & grizzlies! Love your writing, hope you're passing it on to the kids.

PS, I know this is getting long, but I showed the teachers a picture of Gene Norris, Mary Vella, and Eileen Hunter from my old Beaufortonian yearbook and warned them they too may live in the writing of one of their students.

Also take a look at Patches, Lost and Found by S.Kroll. This is a book we read aloud to kids to teach draw first then add words. I ordered Poppy's Pants, but it hadn't come in so we looked some of the pictures I got from the internet and we read the summary. We will be getting the book for our school library. What is so profound about MRL is that on your journey to become a writer, your figured out the same strategies we use today to teach kids to write (Write about what you know, share your emotions, Write a book like____, Pick a writer you like....) We have given simple labels for the very things you so powerfully described in MRL. Children need to hear your voice...Not us teachers tellling kids "Pat Conroy says....."

I am a special ed teacher and led a professional development session at my school Friday. I was presenting on teaching writing through illustration based on the work of Katie Wood Ray's In Pictures and In Words. I added a few slides in my power point about your book and we listened to your interview. The role of reading aloud and hearing your mother's voice as your reading voice was powerful for us elementary teachers as reading aloud is a foundational activity for teaching reading and writing for us. Please read Patricia Polacco's Thank You, Mr Falkner. I want to continue my challenge to you-to write a children's book. Gene Norris would say, "Eat the apple, boy." You have so much to say to elementary kids.

Mr. Conroy, I must tell you that it has been true pleasure to discover your gift of poetic prose. I am relunctantly near to the end of South of Broad. It has been such a wonderful read. I truly enjoy your writing and look forward to discovering more of your work in the near future. Thanks again!
