Pat, I have loved your work from the first time I picked it up. My favorites are The Great Santini, The Prince of Tides and The Lords of Discipline. You have been an inspiration to me about family travesties and forgiveness. Thank you.

Dear Pat,
I have been a voracious amateur reader from age 18. (at sea) I am now a not so majestic fifty-one. I read 'Prince of Tides' some five years ago. This is the most beautifully well crafted and lyrical book I have ever read.- brought standing hairs to my neck and tears to my eyes. Take my hat off to someone who can use the word 'argentine' in building a picture- I can still see that dolphin shimmering in my mind's eye -five years on. Anyway, I bought 'Beach Music' but dare not read it as I anticipated how I felt it would move me. It sat on my shelf for over a year but was well worth it when I read it.
Thank you for the pain and pleasure.

I find myself in awe that I'm typing this, but felt compelled to write after reading Beach Music. I felt the book resonate in countless ways as a widow before my time as my husband succumbed to fronto temporal dementia.

To decompress, I took to the road and logged 4200 miles on my odometer. After reading Beach Music, I learned you were also the author of Prince of Tides.

One trip we had wanted to take was on the Harley my husband owned and tour the Outer Banks and down through the south to Florida. It was on that road trip thinking of him that I crossed over the bridge shown in the movie with Nolte driving in an old Ford Mustang that I said those words like a prayer, "Lowenstein, Lowenstein, Lowenstein".

Your writing is pure poetry.

Okay, okay, I am claiming a world record here. In September I completed fifteen reads of South of Broad. In early October, for the first time, I visited Charleston and guess what I did next, I started my sixteenth read.

I know that I first fell in love with that sweetest of characters, Leo Bloom King, the likes of someone I have never known in all the books I've cherished. And then I met Charleston and now I know Bay Street, and the Battery, Tradd, Water, and Meeting Streets, and Berlin's Men's Store where I nearly jumped out of the carriage that carried us on our tour.

Our dear friend Pat Conroy, you have given us all such wonderful gifts. Enjoy Beaufort. Maybe a book someday about that lovely place!!

I just moved into a furnished house and there are a bunch of books here. I just finished reading My Losing Season. Having never watch a basketball game in my life, I was captivated none the less. I now will go to the library and read every book you have written.

Pat, I had a ticket for tomorrow's Town Hall in Tulsa but had to give it away because a call to wifely duties came first. So I gave your ticket to an elderly coach who wanted to hear you speak because he had read, My Losing Season.

I am currently reading your cookbook. I knew it would be wonderful and it is. I, too, love to cook. I am Italian, second generation, but I have a coveted recipe for Italian meatballs that is exactly as my grandmother made them. All I can say about them is that they are unforgetable!! And they are highly requested by friends and relatives.

If you would like, I will be happy to send you the recipe. Welcome to Tulsa. I have read you very much liked being there. I think you have the capacity to enjoy life wherever you are. God bless!! Mari

I just bought "The Prince of Tides" for $1 at the Salvation Army. It is in perfect condition. Not a first edition. But here is the exciting part, it is autographed!!! and personalized!! " for the love of great daughters" it says. At the bottom of the autograph is a drawing of a tiny dolphin jumping with a tiny man straddleing it with a tiny spyglass held to his eye. Or it might be a tiny wine bottle held to his mouth. I would love more information on the dolphin. The autograph is clearly written in fountain pen as is the dolphin. It's beautiful.

There is an interesting article in the Montgomery County MD Gazette about Joseph Monte who was Pat’s mentor in high school at Gonzaga in Washington DC. He is 80 yrs. old and still working in a school in Montgomery County MD. I think Pat would be interested in the story!!
