I checked out Beach Music audio book from the library, and it took no time at all listening to the resitation of Conroy's book to know that no matter how wonderful the rendition there is nothing like letting his words sing in my head as my fingers caressed the paper. I have returned the CD's early and unfinished, gone to my book shelves and pulled down the paper to reread and fall in love for the thousanth time with his prose.

I am in the middle of your book, My Reading Life, and I have to tell you how much I love your presentation of Gene Norris, your former English teacher. When I started teaching (Spanish) at Beaufort High in 1982, Gene had me and another new teacher over his house for shrimp and grits. Having come from New England and recently graduated from a state teachers college there, Beaufort, as you may imagine, was quite a change for me. But Gene made me feel at home in Beaufort, and I made teaching in SC my life's work (I am now semi-retired and teach Latin part time at a public school in Columbia). Your books helped acclimate me to S.C., which has become such a part of me that I could never leave.

I just watched The River is Wide. I still have tears in my eyes. Did you keep in touch with any of the children you taught on the island?

Conrack touched me in a way an adolescent girl could not verbally describe. As an adult Prince of Tides was a view into my memories and experiences. Your truth is so many people's truth. Thank you from a Carolina born girl.

I've had a love affair with your magniloquent prose since I was 14 and read Prince of Tides. However, Beach Music is my true lover. And goddamnit Pat, you better not die before I meet you or at least are in your presence for a fleeting moment of quiet desperation and bashful imposition! Are you one of those Southerners who is scared of big cities like Los Angeles? Even this hard-hearted city has hidden pockets of passion awoken by your authentic love of women, cooking, and the South. God bless Pat Conroy.

Mr. Conroy, I just finished "devouring" MY READING LIFE and wanted to share how much I adore this story and your writing style. No words can express my feelings through each wonderful chapter so beautifully written. I read your other books and saw two of the movies. Although you wrote that Daufuske Island was your last teaching job, I think you would be an exceptional teacher and mentor. Your author references provided me with new literature for exploration. If you visit the Chicago area in the future, I hope that I will find out and be able to hear you lecture or attend a book signing. It is unfortunate that your Contact site received spam - I would like to share further thoughts . . . perhaps this message will find its way to your attention. I'm on LinkedIn and Facebook.

Mr. Conroy, I know you've written about Joe Monte before, and I thought you might want to contact Fred Shelly to get a copy of the newsletter, to see what other people write. As you probably know, Mr. Joseph Monte will retire at the end of this school year after 50 years. In order to recognize his retirement, let me ask you to write a few words about what Mr. Monte's work has meant to the school and to you personally.
