Dear (may I say ) Pat. Recently I discovered Marshall Frady. He is the second author from the South who has found a home in my heart. But you were the first. I have NEVER read/heard anyone like you or him "touch" the English language with a light that is almost ecstatic at times. I'm an old. happily retired priest, 83, living in a cabin in the Bush in Canada. I have read every book you have ever written and on my shelf I keep "Prince of Tides" and "Beach Music" and re-read them every year. When I read either of you sometimes I close the book and wonder how it is that such Seraphim of the English language have come into my humble abode.
PS. I hope you don't mind if I remember you in my prayer now and then. Bless you.

You are my favorite author, and you have brought me to Beaufort many times through your books AND five times over the course of the last eleven years (physically) and surrounded me in lowcountry beauty! And now, the Great Santini's son fills a mother's heart with love, because your words of love for your dear friend Tim Belk have shined love onto her son that you do not even know....but you do!
God Bless your holidays!

On so many levels, this story brought tears to my eyes. You wrote the most beautiful tribute and friendship history that I could have hoped to read. As the mother of a 19 year old son who is beautiful and gifted in so many ways, it has been so hard to see him struggle and be marginalized for who he is, and how he was created. Your story brings additional hope. I can only pray for a true friend to stand by my son's side through thick and thin. A friend that will create a lifetime of memories with him and views him as the person he is and what he has to offer, and not the stereotypes the world creates.

My husband and I are visiting Charleston this weekend, having spent today in Beaufort, mostly because of your novels! I still remember a most generous thing you did for me many years ago when I was a high school librarian in Kansas. I had recommended The Prince of Tides to a student, who told her friends how wonderful it was. Soon they had all read it and wanted me to schedule a meeting so they could discuss it. That was the beginning of a terrific book club of high school readers. We sent a picture of the kids with a letter telling you how much your books meant to them. You wrote a gracious handwritten response, a note which I treasure to this day. The students have never forgotten that generous gesture.

Dear Mr. Conroy, I just finished listening to your audio book, My Reading Life. I love listening to author's read their own works, for the reasons you mentioned in the interview. I have read South of Broad, actually I read it aloud to my wife. I have always enjoyed reading aloud and have done so as often as possible. Many hours reading to my wife, our son, and his classmates at times, and to some of the people I have taken care of over the years (I am a Certified Nursing Assistant). Sharing a love for story, I, too, am a Southern Reader. Like you I love Southern Writers, i.e., Faulkner, JK OToole (finally read CofDunces) actually, listened to audio. I love Harry Crews, Larry Brown, Lewis Grizzard, and many others. I was born in Lexington, KY grew up in Columbus, GA and ATLGA

Oh Mr. Conroy, how your interview yesterday with Walter Edgars moved me. Listening to you talk about your life and your family with grace and humor describing situations that would bring most people to their knees made me realize that it was time to reach out to my family and try and make peace. Thank you.

I have always admired and loved your work. Question on "My Reading Life" - Early in the book you told a story about meeting Archibald Rutledge-SC Poet Laurate. Towards the end of the book when talking about James Dickey, you said "He was the first poet I ever met". This appears to be a proofing error that has troubled me. Please explain.

Our son just graduated from Boot Camp from Parris Island, and we stayed in Beaufort for a few extra days and picked up an autographed copy of The Death of Santini, love the town, and love Pat's writing.
Thank you

We traveled from Knoxville for your kickoff of your new book tour of the Death of Santini in Oct. at the USCB. .We love Beaufort, and visit there a couple of times each year. It was a pleasure meeting you and hearing your stories about the book. Thoroughly enjoyed the book, and all of your books! Your inspiration has helped us in dealing with the dysfunction that exists in our family! We recently heard of your appearance on April 23 in Knoxville and are hosting a table of our friends and, your fans, at this event! So much looking forward to hearing you again! Your honesty, and writing is amazing! The best to you and your family!
