Dear Pat, I came to see you when you visited Winnetka, IL a couple of years ago when you were doing a book tour for The Death of Santini. I will never forget listening to you and then having the absolute thrill of getting to actually meet you, my favorite writer! Your writing is incomparable and I have to read many of your descriptions aloud just to marvel at the beauty of the words you select and the pictures you paint! As a teacher, I have to say that The Water is Wide has been my favorite book because of the passion you gave the children so they might be exposed to the life they so deserved. I look forward to your return to good health and hope the battle is not too difficult for you. You and your wife will be in my thoughts constantly.

Pat, my family has been fighting various forms of cancer for decades, so the angst was familiar when I read about yours, triggering an immediate prayer for you and your family... one for mine, as well. As to wanting to complete the book you're writing, it's brave of you to think of your fans first, but I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say take care of yourself first... maybe I'm being selfish, but we'd love several more books rather than just one. On a more personal note, I'll never be able to thank you enough for being so gracious as to give this novice writer a kind remark for a first novel last spring... so proud of it, in fact, that I placed it on the cover. Get well, you're a true southern legend, and there aren't enough of those to go around.

There is a wonderful men's retreat at St. Peter Chanel March 12,13 for men. It is also at the Cathedral, March 5, 6. I have thought of you and your anger at your father and pray that you will find closure and healing. You are the Mustard seed of growth for so many in " The Water is Wide. Your peace and comfort are in my prayers.

One of the most meaningful days in my life was meeting you in beautiful Beaufort, for the South of Broad book signing. We traveled across the country to meet you, my favorite author. I consider it an experience of a lifetime and the smile on my face said it all. Because of your willingness to share through your writing, you transform lives. Today I honor you, Pat Conroy, for all you have given the literary world and send the only thing I can offer; my thoughts and prayers during your fight with cancer. Climb in the ring, put on the gloves, and kick some “cancer ass”! And to your family, they are your “corner men/women”; may their love and support hold you up. I know you will tackle this challenge with determination, humor, and southern sass.

I've read all of your books but truly became a true fan with Beach Music. M.D. Anderson is a special place and good things happen there. From a native SC girl (Spartanburg) thank you for sharing so much of yourself with all of us. May God bless you with a speedy recovery. I am looking forward to the next novel and getting to know you even better.

"Upsetting news from one of my favorite people ... kick its ass Conroy!!!" on my feed from a friend Neal, caught my eye. Just came back from my first radiation consult at MD Anderson in Camden and 'kick its ass' talked to me. I was about to choose some books for my upcoming 5 weeks of daily radiation/chemo. never read your books, but I 'll start with South of Broad. Since we had to cancel our yearly winter roadtrip down south so I can attack this colon cancer i was just handed, I'll welcome a diversion to those southern cities I enjoy stopping in every year. I'm going to keep an eye on your progress, let's both 'kick some cancer ass' with those wonderful people at Anderson.
