Dear Mr. Conroy: I have found great inspiration in every one of your works that I have read. The Water is Wide was particularly inspiring to me and served as a touchstone in my 5 1/2 years teaching high school equivalency in a medium security prison. My sister is also an avid reader, and I look forward to her reaction after she finishes reading My Reading Life. Your works have also made Lowcountry South Carolina my favorite place to vacation. You and Lords of Discipline are ever on my mind and in my heart when my wife and I take our yearly trip to Charleston. Godspeed and love to you during this new chapter of your life. Know that your work and uncompromising practice of the craft have inspired me. Thank you, Patroy Conrack. With warmest and highest regards, Alan Gruver

Healing. God heals. I don't understand the why's of suffering, or why prayer is answered in ways that are not always comprehendable. Still, I believe in prayer. I will pray for your healing and comfort. For so long I have wished to share my story with you about my southern daddy - a railroad man - full of both love and hate. Selfishly, I hope you recover soon and one day we bump into each other so that I can introduce you to a character you may one day wish to explore.

I'm holding you to your next book. I have read every book at least twice, including testing recipes in your cookbook.

I have already sent you a private message on your FB page, and it is my sincere pray that you receive it. However, let me take just a moment in time to say, "there is only one Pat Conroy." All others, before and after, pale in comparison. Your words not only inspire, they require more of each us as human beings. They make us dig deep inside ourselves and search for truth that maybe we don't always want to see. And most importantly for me, you gave me an outlet gor my pain. I was molested as a child and didn't admit yhst until well until adulthood. After reading Prince of Tides, I decided to begin to write my own story. Believe it or not, for me, that was just within the past two years. I have just started my book... thank you!

Since the moment I read a complete page written by you, you have been my favorite author. How I wish I had been in Beaufort to meet you. We have our love of the written word, the ocean, and 30A in common and now unfortunately we have something else that bonds us - cancer. So you have cancer - now what - is what runs through your brain and puts a chill in your heart. You will be forever changed by this battle. Oh how I want you to know that we are praying and sending hugs. And oh how I hope your next novel includes a character with cancer. Not a novel about cancer but rather a character fighting the cancer battle. What could be more real? And no one has really done it that way. This will be the greatest challenge you will ever face. Fight as hard as you can, but live your life.

Pat, I feel like you are part of my family. Your novels strike a nerve of Truth about life - the raw emotions of our human condition - especially the sweetness and the sorrows of family love. Your gift with words has transported me to the beauties of a southern beach, baby turtles, Italy! I was so excited to meet you when you came to the Book signing in Dunwoody, Georgia about a year ago! Ihave heard that you are working on a new novel. I can't wait! I will be praying for you faithfully!

Dear Pat, I came to see you when you visited Winnetka, IL a couple of years ago when you were doing a book tour for The Death of Santini. I will never forget listening to you and then having the absolute thrill of getting to actually meet you, my favorite writer! Your writing is incomparable and I have to read many of your descriptions aloud just to marvel at the beauty of the words you select and the pictures you paint! As a teacher, I have to say that The Water is Wide has been my favorite book because of the passion you gave the children so they might be exposed to the life they so deserved. I look forward to your return to good health and hope the battle is not too difficult for you. You and your wife will be in my thoughts constantly.
