Dear Pat, Butch and I have been thinking about you and remembering all the Old New York Bookshop exploits. We send our love and prayers for your recovery. Like you, we have fought the battle that is cancer with our loved ones. We have learned to relish each precious day, and I know that you too have learned that lesson well. Keep the faith, Marsha

Mr. Conroy, I owe you a lot. If not for you, my first novel, A Chance to Say Yes, might never have been written, much less published. I acknowledged you in my book because years ago, at the Miami Book Fair, you gave me words of encouragement that have never left me. You told me not to let anyone tell me I couldn't be a writer--and I haven't. Now I wish you all the love and support in the world. Bless you in your time of trial. Keep your thoughts high.

Dr. William Wilson practiced psychology at Duke Hospital for many years. He retired and several years later he became very ill. Was taken to Hospice to die. His local patience surrounded his bed and prayed for several weeks. Miraculously her recovered. Returned home and lived 5 years. We upir readers are praying for your recovery.

Mr. Conroy, I first became acquainted with your work when I read The Great Santini in high school. It was perhaps the first confirmation I had ever received that I was not the only person in the world who came from a screwed up family. I have remained a faithful reader ever since. I was so sorry to hear of your recent cancer diagnosis. Please accept my best wishes for a full recovery and a return to good health. You will be in my thoughts.

Dear Pat, I just sent several St. Michael medallions. Michael is the famed Archangel who fought the evil dragon and WON. He's also the patron saint of Army Aviation, and he has brought thousands of aviators and their sons home safely. He stand alongside you. Many affect our lives; few CHANGE them. YOU change people, Pat, pull them up to their tallest and grandest humanity, and then eschew any credit. Fighting the petit tyrants for the voiceless millions robbed of power, you took the hits for them, physically and metaphorically, releasing countless tortured souls from the bondage of abuse—and all of them send healing love to you now, the combined power colossal. I love you and Sandra, always have… Cheryl

Darling Pat, The COLONEL and I are behind you all the way. But, hot damn--couldn't you take on an easy challenge for once, Conroy? Remember our son, Jeff; he had ZERO chance medically of surviving over nine years ago, and now he's out of Princeton, married, and studying to become a doctor! He kept saying, "I'm stronger and better than ever...stronger and better than ever." And I guess his body heard his heart and followed suit. He also said, "Thank you for my miracle," over and over. And a miracle he got. Sending cards, pictures, old letters, and other evidence of my 45-year adulation of you to Nan for forwarding. You're my hero, Pat Conroy--the strongest, most generous, most brilliant man I know. Love, Cheryl
