I could pave the world with letters composed in my head to the famous people I revere. This time, at age 78, I'm actually writing one of them; to you, Pat Conroy. Waiting for anything you've composed is both an agony and a privilege. You see, I know that to craft the kind of words you put to paper are not from a good novelist who manufactures a book a year. They just feed me while I wait for you. To my sensitivities, each word you put to a page is like the magic of a child being born. Yes, with all the pain of that which brings such beauty into the World when done with the bone crunching labor. South of Broad and all the rest of your works have enriched my life. I would be cheating myself to not express my love, admiration, and esteem. My Catholic self prays for your recovery

I am at work trying not to cry because I just finished S.O.B. I listened to it on CD while sending out boring requests for payment. I am going to have to buy the book so I can make a map of all the places you described. I want to walk all over Charleston during Parent's Weekend at the Citadel. Thank you for this amazing love letter to Charleston.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for another wonderful book.! I'm looking at your schedule and making plans to attend a book-signing close by. I've attended an event for each book since "Prince Of Tides". Your readers should know it's a wonderful experience when fans are in line for hours and hours, calmly waiting our turn to speak to you, and how absolutely warm and friendly you are!

I'm sure these signings are very strenuous, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Hello from all your "Wheale" friend.

re: South of Broad. Sheba would know that it was Tammy Wynnette who sang D-I-V-O-R-C-E, not Aretha Franklin. That boo boo sucked the joy right out of the book for me. I was really loving it up until then. wth?

I just finished reading South of Broad. As a native Charlestonian, I completely understand the social life in Charleston that is the basis of your book. The way of life "below Broad" is so different. Even though I attended Ashley Hall for 12 years, I never quite fit in. I totally understand your characters. The book made me cry on occasion and made me laugh as well. Thank you for sharing your God given talent. I am waiting with baited breath for the next one! Thanks for signing my books too! :-)

As predicted, in my second reading of South of Broad...the one which entails underlining vivid word images to share with great delight. After reviewing the few critical comments on this ePage, this quote from the master of human insight and artful use of the English language seems most appropriate:

"...leading to a maggotty and fly bespeckled culture."

Pat Conroy, South of Broad

Just finished South of Broad, and I just loved it! My sister and I have been fans since Beach Music, and I can't wait to surprise her with a copy of South of Broad for her birthday at the end of September. Thank you for writing such a great story.
