re: South of Broad. Sheba would know that it was Tammy Wynnette who sang D-I-V-O-R-C-E, not Aretha Franklin. That boo boo sucked the joy right out of the book for me. I was really loving it up until then. wth?

I just finished reading South of Broad. As a native Charlestonian, I completely understand the social life in Charleston that is the basis of your book. The way of life "below Broad" is so different. Even though I attended Ashley Hall for 12 years, I never quite fit in. I totally understand your characters. The book made me cry on occasion and made me laugh as well. Thank you for sharing your God given talent. I am waiting with baited breath for the next one! Thanks for signing my books too! :-)

As predicted, in my second reading of South of Broad...the one which entails underlining vivid word images to share with great delight. After reviewing the few critical comments on this ePage, this quote from the master of human insight and artful use of the English language seems most appropriate:

"...leading to a maggotty and fly bespeckled culture."

Pat Conroy, South of Broad

Just finished South of Broad, and I just loved it! My sister and I have been fans since Beach Music, and I can't wait to surprise her with a copy of South of Broad for her birthday at the end of September. Thank you for writing such a great story.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. South of Broad is so wonderful. I try to write and it comes out gobble-de-gook, so I appreciate you more!
Rest, peace, laughter and beautiful, health to you!

Dear Mr. Conroy,

My English isn't good enough to fully understand your books in English, so I read them in Dutch. I really hope your latest book will be published in the Netherlands too. Meanwhile, I've enjoyed all your books. Through the film Prince of Tides I discovered you as a writer. This first book I read was a big feast. Beach Mucis is my favourite. I like to think that the Dutch translations convey your “voice”. I really enjoy your humour (I love that witty tone) and your vivid characters and landscapes make your books live on in my memory. And when I get older (retired) I'll read them again. Maybe even with more understanding of the psychological depth and surely with more delight. Thank you for your books!

To my absolute favorite writer--

South of Broad
I feel:
Overkill with dysfuction
Lack of character development with main characters

I just finished SOUTH OF BROAD. I read all your books excepting THE BOO and the cookbook. I re-read LORDS OF... and BEACH MUSIC after reading MY LOOSING SEASON, just to have a refresher on these novels, after having discovered that the character of your father in SANTINI was not a composite of many officers in the Marines but not even close to the reality. I was stunned. You are one of the very best writers I am aware of. My wife and I know Charleston very well, which was an added interest. We will be retiring soon in a home we bought in Hilton Head Island. I sincerely hope we will meet someday.

Mr. Conroy, I'm sad. I have not been able to attach myself to your new publication, "South of Broad". I have read and loved virtually all of your books, "Prince of Tides" being my favorite. This one...not so much. Is it possible to pack too much dysfunction into 4oo pages? You never lost my interest because it was never found. I waited 14 years and two months on the waiting list to purchase..sad. Am a lover of Charleston even as a yankee, lover of your prose, even while some see it as unnecessay wordiness. Loved the narrator, his father but the rest ...well exhausting. Am halfway through, please tell me I will close the book regretting these words. Abusive, incessuous,, murderous pedophile..yup, got 'em in every neighborhood. Sometimes smaller strokes are more imaginative. SAD!
