Just finished So. of Broad and laughed and cried. Please don' wait another 14 years for another of your masterpieces or I'll be gone by then! Will head for Beach Music again. Thank you for the joy and sadness and philosophy you've given me. Your books are the ones I wait on for decades. See if you can squeak another one out soon. Many thanks. Your books give me such joy, sorrow, and finally human reason.

I have waited for another Conroy novel and today, purchased South of Broad. I loved every single word of Beach Music. It is about My South. Read that Mrs. Conroy and Pat's mom are both from Alabama. What cities?

Two clues emerge as one reads a novel, as to whether it will be remarkable. One, the reader feels as if he or she knows the characters personally. Two, the reader feels some measure of sorrow upon closing the cover at its finish. Mr. Conroy, you are a great story-teller and a master, master wordsmith. "South of Broad" will become a classic, I have no doubt.

As a born & bred Californian I attended Mississippi State College for Women (MUW now -- and soon to be Reneau University) during the sixties and discovered the South where my dad started his life. I enjoy reading about the South (even receive "Southern Living" magazine) and am enjoying "South of Broad" which I read when I am on my many travels.

I came to visit Folly Beach and Charleston 2 years ago and fell in love with the beauty of the area and all it has to offer. I moved here last year and have enjoyed every minute. Reading South Of Broad brought such vivid pictures and stirred my soul. You can picture every street, area, and character described. Absolutely the best book I have read in years. Thanks so very much for the adventure. Looking forward to reading other books you have written.

As a SC native living in Cincinnati at the time Beach Music was released it served as a comfort and stirred a longing to return to the lowcountry. I have been here since and married my husband at Summeral Chapel (he wears the ring). I am savoring South of Broad and wish to thank you for every novel-it is a true gift when words can create an image so vivid it brings about all senses. Thank you!

We met Pat when he spoke for the Wolfson Children's Hospital. At the reception afterwards, Pat commented that his father would love my husband's tie, a maroon tie with baseballs given to my husband by the parents of one of his Little League team. I looked at my husband, Tip, and said, "The Great Santini would love your tie." So with a little encouragement he removed the tie and gave it to Pat for his father. We haved loved sharing that story. My husband now has ALS ,and is living every moment of his life . I am almost finished with South of Broad and loving the the characters as if they were my own friends. I'll pass the book right to my husband, who will love it and we will giggle again about his tie and the Great Santini.

I met you years ago at Fripp. I bought a copy of Beach Music on the island. I didn't plan on reading it, it was to be a souvenir. I ran into you and you signed the book for me. The next year our daughter spent ten days in the hospital. She slept a lot, and I sat there worrying. I grabbed my copy of Beach Music. The book helped calm me during a very scary time. This year we came back to Fripp. I waited till I got to here to buy your new book, hoping to get an autographed copy. I got my book, but not autographed. I haven't seen you this time. We are leaving tomorrow morning. I want you to know how special Beach Music is to me and thank you for writing it. I am loving South of Broad. Sincerely, Tammy Leyman
P.S. Fripp is a wonderful place!!!

Having read all of Pat Conroys major works I found South of Broad nothing less than all the others: a magnificient work of art.

Originally I was drawn to his works by a common life experience as the child of an American military officer. While I certainly didn't grow up in the tyranical environment Mr. Conroy portrays in The Great Santini I had friends who did.

There is a commom thread of truth that military youngsters share. Pat Conroy has placed those truths on paper and given validity to the plight of military children who struggle to grow up in isolation, searching for home and living up to parental expectations in ever changing environments.

I hope Charlestonians read South of Broad and gratefully discover themselves in his writing. This is a masterpiece to savor.

Just finished reading SOB....was worth every moment I waited for it since Beach Music! There were quite a few twists I didn't see coming at all! Now if only we wouldn't have to wait another 14 years for a new book. lol I've been reading Mr. Conroy's books since the 80s, when I was in high school, my English teacher said it was an odd choice of author for a young high school girl, I didn't get that, I loved every word of every book since day one.
