Pat, I read many of your books as a teenager, and had just started to re-read and devour all of your works again in preparation for an upcoming trip to Charleston. I've been looking forward to seeing the south as you've told it in stories. 15 years later, your books still entrance and amaze me. You're a stunning storyteller and I'm thrilled to've had a chance to be a fan of yours. Deepest condolences to your friends and family. You will be missed, but your stories will live on. To me, an entire region of this country will be artfully colored by your experiences, and my visit will be nothing if not a tour of Conroy's Carolina. Thank you for your stories and your bitter honesty. So sad I will not get to one day shake your hand.

Pat's battle with cancer has ended. I sit here with tears streaming down my face. I am so grateful that I made the trip to Beaufort for his 70th birthday celebration. He was so affable and gracious to everyone. It was so uplifting to be surrounded by readers who love his books as much as I do. I know we are all feeling totally bereft. Thank you, Pat, for who you were and for your willingness to share so eloquently all aspects of the human experience.

Rest in gentle and untroubled peace, Sir. Thank you for the thoughtful loveliness your words have brought to me. I shall continue to reread them for as long as I live.

We have Southern roots, are military brats, we had our own Santini and so loved your ability to write about those who harmed all of you with compassion, love, honesty and with both insight and confusion. Rest in peace beautiful man.

I love your writing best of all. I have read every book several times. Your latest, The Death of Santini, tied them all together. I know it's too late for you to read this but I know your spirit will always sit on my bookshelf with my Conroy collection. Thank you for your magic.
